New York City FC announced on Monday that Norwegian center-back Birk Risa has officially been transferred to Molde FK, marking the end of his two-year stint in Major League Soccer.
Risa joined NYCFC in the summer of 2023, arriving from Molde FK as a proven defender with European experience. Over two seasons, he made 62 appearances across all competitions, recording one assist and playing a key role in NYCFC’s backline.
His time in New York was marked by consistency, composure, and leadership at the back, but the club confirmed that the player expressed a strong desire to return to his native Norway for personal reasons.
“We respect Birk’s desire to return home to be closer to his family,” said NYCFC Sporting Director David Lee. “We thank him for his professionalism, and this move also gives us additional roster and salary cap flexibility.”
Back to Familiar Grounds
Molde FK is a familiar home for Risa, who played 95 games, scored 3 goals, and provided 6 assists during his previous spell with the club from 2020 to 2023. He helped the team win both the Eliteserien (Norwegian top division) and the Norwegian Cup, establishing himself as one of the top defenders in the league.
His return to Molde comes as the club prepares for a busy second half of the season, including potential European competition.
“I’ve made memories in New York that will stay with me forever,” Risa said in his farewell message. “I’m grateful to the fans, my teammates, and the coaching staff for everything. Representing this club and this city was an honor.”
What It Means for NYCFC
The move frees up both a senior roster spot and international slot, giving NYCFC the ability to pursue reinforcements during the summer transfer window. The club is expected to look for defensive depth, but may also use the flexibility to strengthen other areas of the squad.
With Risa gone, Thiago Martins, Strahinja Tanasijević, and Stephen Turnbull may see increased minutes, while fans await word on any incoming transfers.
Quick Summary:
- Out: Birk Risa (CB)
- To: Molde FK (Norway)
- Appearances for NYCFC: 62
