Kansas City Current extended their unbeaten run. They tightened their grip on the top of the NWSL table. They achieved this with a commanding 2–1 victory over NJ/NY Gotham FC on a rainy afternoon at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Michelle Cooper and Temwa Chawinga scored early goals. Because of these, the Current showcased why they are the most dangerous team in the league. This performance is crucial as they head into the summer stretch.
Lightning Start Silences the Stadium
The match opened with immediate urgency from Kansas City. Just three minutes into the contest, forward Michelle Cooper pounced on a defensive error, finishing calmly to give the visitors an early 1–0 lead. It was Cooper’s second goal of the season and a statement of intent from a side that’s made quick starts a habit.
Only eight minutes later, the league’s top scorer Temwa Chawinga doubled the lead. After a clever one-two between Rocky Rodríguez and Cooper, Chawinga capitalized on a loose ball inside the box and fired it past Gotham keeper Ann-Katrin Berger, bringing her season tally to seven goals.
Gotham’s Late Response Not Enough
Despite a sluggish first half, Gotham FC improved after the break. The home side pushed forward, controlling possession and creating chances. Their breakthrough came in stoppage time when a Kansas City own goal gave Gotham a glimmer of hope. However, Gotham could have won the game with two disallowed goals. Some experts agreed the foul call on Sonnett was correct. Others viewed Gonzalez’s disallowed goal as dubious. “The referee didn’t consider Wheeler’s deflection deliberate but that decision left a sour taste”
